Dry Eye and MGD

Can screens cause dry eyes?

Screens do not damage the eyes, but they reduce how often and how completely you blink, so the tear film dries out. The result is burning, gritty, tired eyes, intermittent blurring and a frontal headache, often called digital eye strain. Regular breaks, deliberate full blinks, correct glasses and lubricants relieve it.

Why it happens

Concentration reduces the blink rate by more than half, and many of the blinks that remain are incomplete, so the lower part of the eye surface is not refreshed. Screens above eye level widen the lids and increase evaporation. Air conditioning and ceiling fans add to it.

Practical measures

  • Every twenty minutes look at something about six metres away for twenty seconds
  • Blink fully and deliberately, letting the lids close completely, several times an hour
  • Position the screen slightly below eye level and about an arm's length away
  • Reduce glare, and increase text size rather than leaning closer
  • Use preservative free lubricating drops before long sessions rather than after symptoms start
  • Direct fans and air conditioning away from your face

Check your glasses

Uncorrected long sightedness, astigmatism or a near prescription that no longer suits your working distance all increase strain. Anyone over about forty doing close work should have their reading prescription checked, and people working at an intermediate distance may benefit from a dedicated screen prescription rather than ordinary reading glasses.

Children and screens

For children the concern is different. Extended near work with limited time outdoors is associated with the development and progression of short sightedness. Encouraging daily outdoor time and breaks from near tasks is sensible, alongside regular eye examinations.

Frequently asked questions

Do blue light filtering glasses help?
Evidence that blue light from screens harms the eyes or that filters relieve strain is weak. Breaks, blinking, correct glasses and lubricants are the measures with real effect.
Should I be worried about permanent damage?
Screen use causes discomfort rather than lasting damage to adult eyes. Persistent symptoms should still be assessed, since dry eye and glasses problems are treatable.
